Who funds CHIS?
CHIS is funded by a network of public agencies and private organizations concerned with improving the status of health care in California, as well as individual researchers and supporters who value CHIS data.

California Department of Public Health and California Department of Health Care Services (CHIS 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009)
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) formerly was the Department of Health Services (DHS). In 2007, DHS split into the new California Department of Public Health and the Department of Health Care Services. DHCS funds many of the health programs in California, including Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Together with the California Department of Public Health, the DHCS is a collaborative partner in CHIS.
First 5 California (CHIS 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009)
First 5 California (also known as the California Children and Families Commission) was created as a result of the California Children and Families Act of 1998 (Proposition 10). It is designed to provide all children under the age of five with a comprehensive and integrated system of early childhood development services.
Kaiser Permanente (CHIS 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009)
Kaiser Permanente is America's largest not-for-profit health care organization, serving 8.1 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. Social benefit activities provided by Kaiser include assistance to the uninsured and special populations; training new health professionals; introducing new delivery and financing methods into the health care arena at large; and through their clinical research efforts, developing and sharing better ways to care for patients.
Blue Shield of California Foundation (CHIS 2007, 2009)
Blue Shield of California Foundation strives to address core social and health problems in ways that can dramatically improve the well-being of Californians in the next several years. The Foundation's goals are universal health coverage for all Californians; health care that is effective, safe, affordable and accessible; and domestic violence prevention.

Created in 1996 as a result of Blue Cross of California's creation of WellPoint Health Networks, a for-profit corporation, The California Endowment is a private, statewide health foundation with approximately $3 billion in assets. Since its inception, The Endowment has awarded more than 3,400 grants totaling over $988,000,000 to community-based organizations throughout California.
California Department of Mental Health (CHIS 2005, 2007,2009)
The California Department of Mental Health (DMH) oversees the public mental health budget. It provides system leadership for state and local county mental health departments; provides system oversight, evaluation and monitoring; administers federal funds; and operates four state hospitals and an acute psychiatric program.
California Office of the Patient Advocate (CHIS 2003, 2005, 2007,2009)
The Office of the Patient Advocate is an independent office under the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency and is responsible for protecting patient rights. The organization provides information on patient rights and responsibilities as part of the goal to ensure that consumers receive the level of health care to which they are entitled under California law.

L.A. Care Health Plan is a local public agency and non-profit health plan serving the residents of Los Angeles County through Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, and Healthy Kids. As one of the largest health plans in California, L.A. Care is the nation's largest public health plan. It is involved in a number of coalitions and collaboratives supporting public health, the safety net, and health insurance for vulnerable populations.
