CHIS 2009 surveyed 49,811 households, including 47,614 adults, 3,379 adolescents and 8,945 children. The survey includes significant samples of Latino, Asian, American Indian and Pacific Islander groups and subgroups, including Chinese, Filipino, Guatemalan, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Salvadoran, South Asian and Vietnamese respondents.

Overview

The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) is a telephone survey that uses a random-digit-dial (RDD) design for a sample that is representative of the state's population.

Geographic groups

CHIS data can be analyzed at the county level for the state's 41 most populated counties. The remaining 17 counties are combined into three different groups. See numbers below.

Age groups

CHIS asks questions that are shared across age groups and also some questions that are unique to only one age group: children (0-11 years of age), adolescents (12-17 years of age), and adults (18 years and older). See numbers below.

Race/ethnicity groups

By including disproportionately higher sampling of many ethnic groups, the CHIS data has greater ability to report on racial/ethnic differences. See numbers below.
